A visitor has blasted a £150 a night hotel that featured in a popular TV documentary series as ‘filthy and disgusting’.

Peter Moss, from north London, took photographs of the state of his room during what he described as a ‘dreadful’ stay at Liverpool’s Adelphi Hotel.

He said room 578 had broken furniture, the window would not close, and it was dusty and dirty with damp and condensation stains. He believes it could have breached health and safety standards.

Mr Moss, who works in property investment, complained to the hotel management but said his email and follow-up letter were ignored.

The 63-year-old was in Liverpool to visit a friend and stayed at the Adelphi for one night on Saturday, October 17.

He said: ‘I could not believe the state of the filthy room. It seemed like a room they might use in emergencies when the hotel is full – and there were some conferences going on at the time.

‘But no hotel – not even a one-star bed and breakfast – should have a room this disgusting.’

Mr Moss said the furniture was broken and badly marked, the window wouldn’t close and there was damp and condensation stains by the windowsill.

Wallpaper was peeling and badly stained, the bathroom floor was filthy and there was a vast amount of dust and dirt.

He added: ‘The lamp was so dusty I could have written my name in it and when I opened the bedside drawer it just fell to pieces.

‘There was no remote for the TV and when they brought me a replacement it only worked half the time and was held together with tape.

‘There seemed to be a lack of staff who actually knew what they were doing.’

Mr Moss described breakfast at the hotel as like a ‘cattle market’.

He said: ‘You stand there with your plate in hand like queuing up for school dinners.’

Mr Moss said that when he complained the hotel’s duty manager told him he was only authorised to offer a 20 per cent discount – £30 off of £150.

‘I took the discount not as settlement of my complaint but as the best ‘on site’ outcome.

‘The complete lack of communications afterwards is what’s frustrated me, they’ve just ignored me.’

The Adelphi is owned by The Britannia Hotels group which was voted the worst hotel group in Britain in a survey by Which? Magazine last year.

It has a three-star average rating on Trip Advisor, collated from 4,137 reviews.

One Trip Advisor member described it as an ‘old hotel with character but smelly’ and another wrote that it was ‘OK for one night in Liverpool’.

The Adelphi featured in the 1997 BBC reality show Hotel and spawned the catchphrase ‘Just cook will yer’ after rows between then deputy manager Brian Burchill and head chef David Smith.

A spokesperson from Britannia Hotels said the group would not respond to Mr Moss’s claims in the press.
