ABOUT KUALA LUMPUR International Airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the fifth busiest airport in Asia and the 14th busiest in the world. It is the main hub for four airlines: Malaysia Airlines, MASkargo, Air Asia and Air Asia X. Located about 50 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, the airport has been the recipient of many awards including three for World’s Best Airport. It has also won awards for its staff and its immigration services. Its commitment to issues of environment and sustainability has led to its status as the only airport in the world to receive the Green Globe certificate. The Green Globe is awarded to companies in the travel and tourism industry that meet certain standards of responsible and sustainable tourism.

The Passenger Terminal Complex consists of two buildings and is particularly notable for its use of green space and natural light. A good deal of glass was used throughout the complex as well as cut-outs in the roof that permit light. The Main Terminal Building was designed around a concept of airport in the jungle, jungle in the airport. The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia worked with the designers and builders to surround the terminal with green space. Nearby, the Satellite Building contains an actual section of rain forest. The Contact Pier is attached to the Main Terminal Building, and both domestic and international flights operate from it. The Aerotrain is a shuttle service that transports passengers from the Contact Pier section of the Main Terminal Building to the Satellite Building.

The airport was opened in 1998 although the groundbreaking ceremony for its construction was held in 1991. It was originally built to replace the then-current international airport, which was known at the time as Subang International Airport. In its early years of operation, the airport weathered a number of challenges that greatly reduced its operations including SARS, the Avian flu and various financial crises both regional and worldwide. Today, however, the airport is thriving and is scheduled for continued development through a number of phases. This development is projected to culminate in the capability to handle 100 million passengers per year by 2020.

Major airlines that operate out of Kuala Lumpur International Airport include Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and United Airlines, among others. In addition to passenger airlines, a number of cargo airlines fly in and out of the airport.
